Can You Put Car Floor Mats in the Washing Machine? Check the Backing First
Usually, hand cleaning is safer. Check the mat’s backing and care instructions, then use the right method for carpet, rubber or molded floor liners.

Usually, no. Hand-clean car floor mats unless the mat manufacturer explicitly allows machine washing and your washer’s instructions permit that type of load. A carpet surface alone is not permission: turn the mat over and check its backing, edges and care label.
Lasfit’s floor-mat guidance advises against machine washing mats containing rubber or plastic components, including carpet mats with those materials. It identifies entirely fabric mats as possible candidates—but still says to check the product label.
Decide by the whole mat, not just the top
| What you have | What to do |
|---|---|
| Rubber mats or molded plastic/TPE floor liners | Clean outside the machine using the maker’s rinse-and-scrub method. |
| Carpet mats with rubber or plastic backing, or a bonded heel pad | Default to vacuuming and controlled hand cleaning unless the maker specifically permits machine washing. |
| Entirely fabric mats labeled machine-washable | Check the washer manual too, then follow the mat’s specified washing and drying instructions. |
| Unknown material, missing instructions or deteriorating backing | Keep it out of the washer; start with vacuuming and gentle spot cleaning. |
The appliance matters as well as the mat. LG’s front-load washer guidance warns that machine washing carpets and rubber mats may damage them. It also explains that unsuitable loads can distribute weight unevenly and extend the spin cycle. A mat fitting inside the drum does not establish that it is a suitable load.
A cold or delicate cycle cannot override either manufacturer’s restrictions. Nor does a “washable” description necessarily mean machine-washable.
Clean rubber mats and molded liners by hand
You need a vacuum, a hose or bucket of clean water, a compatible cleaner, a soft-to-medium brush and towels.
- Remove the mats. Release their retainers first, if fitted. Shake off loose debris and vacuum remaining grit.
- Rinse away loose dirt. A garden hose is sufficient for this first pass; there is no need to start with a pressure washer.
- Apply the approved cleaner. Follow its dilution and contact-time directions. Do not invent a stronger mix for stubborn marks.
- Brush the grooves and textured areas. Start gently rather than attacking a mark with a stiff brush.
- Rinse off the cleaner and dry fully. Check the underside and recesses before reinstalling.
For WeatherTech FloorLiners and its listed floor-mat ranges, the manufacturer specifies fresh-water rinsing, its dedicated cleaner or mild detergent with warm water, brushing with a medium-bristle brush, then rinsing and drying. See WeatherTech’s cleaning instructions.
Skip tire shine and ordinary oil-based dressings on rubber and TPE mats. Lasfit warns against these products and also warns that silicone- or oil-based dressings make vinyl mats slippery. A clean mat does not need a glossy finish.
Clean carpet mats without soaking the backing
For mats without machine-washing approval, use a low-moisture approach:
- Vacuum both sides thoroughly. Remove dry grit before adding cleaner.
- Patch-test an automotive carpet cleaner in a small, inconspicuous area. Stop if color transfers or the surface changes.
- Treat stains locally, following the cleaner’s dilution, dwell time and agitation instructions. Work with a soft brush or cloth rather than saturating the mat.
- Remove residue as directed. For a cleaner requiring a damp wipe, use a clean, lightly damp cloth and blot afterward. Do not hose-rinse a backed carpet mat unless its care instructions allow it.
- Air-dry with both sides exposed. Do not choose a tumble-dryer setting by guesswork.
Ford’s 2023 Mustang Mach-E carpet-care instructions likewise use vacuuming and a soft damp cloth, and warn against oversaturating stained fabric. Your own mat’s instructions remain the deciding reference.
Before refitting, confirm the mat is completely dry, lies flat and is secured as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. If the driver’s mat curls or no longer secures properly, leave it out until corrected. Ford’s floor-mat instructions explicitly say not to drive with a loose driver-side mat.
